Culture Fancier goes Hollywood with this interview! I'm pleased to present my interview with Titus Makin. Thanks to Project Light Agency for reaching out.
Titus Makin is a pop artist, songwriter, and actor from Sierra Vista, Arizona. After graduating from the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue his acting and musical career on a professional level.
Titus has worked with multiple music and acting industry professionals due to his time on Fox’s hit show “Glee,” and tour engagements related to “Glee: Live.” Titus has also starred in CW’s Star-Crossed and hit shows such as Pretty Little Liars, Grey’s Anatomy among others. Titus is currently playing the character Caleb Matthews, a musician, on Hulu’s “The Path.”
As an artist, Titus cites Lenny Kravitz, Pharrell Williams, Cee Lo Green & Adam Levine as some of his musical inspirations. His sound could be described as mainstream pop, coupled with soul undertones. Titus has written with and been produced by some of pop’s top producers: Jake Scott, Aaron Kellim and David Hodges (Evanescence, Christina Perri, Kelly Clarkson).
Directed by The Reininga Brothers, Titus Makin has recently released the visuals for his catchy pop single Ropes. Speaking of the creative process, he adds "Ropes is about the constant war we have with ourselves every single day! When we want to do good but evil is always present with us. The inward battle of trying to rid yourself of old harmful habits and cling to the healthy. Keeping your connection to God & not turning away trying to fulfill your own selfish desires" His new single ‘Ropes’ is now available on all digital and streaming platforms as of October 11th. With another single ‘Good Love’ coming out in a few weeks and a second EP ‘Lean’ in the making, there’s no doubt that Titus Makin is a rising multi-skilled artist to watch closely in 2017.
1. Was creativity a part of your childhood?
Yes very much so. I grew up as a competitive gymnast & dancer. I also took an interest in drawing at an early age. I grew up around arts, due to my mom modeling early in her life and being involved with fashion.
2. Was your family supportive of your decision to pursue a career in show business?
Yes, they were extremely supportive & excited to take this new journey with me, which now I realize is a huge blessing due to a lot of parents being very set on what they think their children should do in their future that's a bit more stable than the entertainment industry.
3. Who or what inspires you?
God inspires me to have perseverance & fearlessness. My mother/father/sister, and Will Smith.
4. What is your typical day like?
Depending on which state I'm in between CA and NY, I get up head to set or an audition, and once complete there I get to head home or to the studio to work on new music. Other than that I love spending time with community. (movie nights, hang sessions, etc.)
5. You have a lot of creative outlets. Is there one you prefer over the other?
Not at all! They kind of switch back and forth out of first place depending on which outlet is busier at the time. But I have love in different ways for each.
6. What's been the highlight of your career so far?
The highlight of my career thus far has been going on tour with Glee for the summer. The venues we were playing were some of the largest in the world. It was insane seeing all the fans and getting to be a part of such a cultural phenomenon.
7. Do you ever get discouraged working in the entertainment industry and if yes, how do you overcome it?
All the time. I honestly have to spend a lot of time in prayer and surrounding myself with people that encourage & inspire me to continue on. Its also helpful to have people around that share common struggles that will understand a bit more when the tough industry times arise.
8. Out of all the roles you've played, which one would you say is the closest to your real life personality?
I would say the personality of the current role of Caleb Matthews I'm playing on Hulu's "The Path." He's friendly, a Christian, a singer, and has some edge to him.
9. Do you have any advice for aspiring artists or creatives?
Keep creating! The more work you produce the closer you become to finding your gold.
10. What's next for you?
My goals are to get with a record label and continue sharing my music with the world! I would love to headline my own tour someday!
